Peer Tutor: Tutor sign up
The Peer Tutor Program matches high school students (“tutors”) with middle school and elementary school students (“tutees”) who have demonstrated a need for academic assistance or a need for support in developing successful study habits. The goals of the program are to provide academic assistance with specific problematic subjects and to create a supportive learning environment that enables the tutees to gain confidence and build self-esteem.

Tutors are required to provide 1 hour of tutoring each week throughout the academic year, except during school vacations. Tutors must be knowledgeable in at least one subject area taught at the middle or elementary school level as well as have the ability to relate to middle or elementary school age youths.  Tutors may be from any grade at the high school level and are eligible to obtain school credit through the community classroom program.

High school students interested in becoming a peer tutor need to complete a peer tutor application form and attend an orientation.  Following successful completion of the orientation, the tutors will meet their tutee match and discuss scheduling (times listed below are only for registration purposes but not the time you have to adhere to) as well as sign a contract to commit to the program for the duration of the school year.

Peer tutors will be required to complete weekly log sheets to record their hours, a brief summary of subjects and concerns covered during each session.  Tutors will have access to a Peer Tutor Coordinator to review the progress of the tutoring sessions and discuss any concerns that have come up.

The middle and elementary school students are required to bring specific assignments or review material to each tutoring session.  It is important that the tutees understand that their tutors are available to help with assignments but are not there to do the work for them.  While learning of this type is much less structured than a typical classroom, tutees should understand that the majority of the tutoring session should be focused on specific assignments, review materials or study strategies.

Once the sign-up window is complete on MyRec, a Y&FS staff will follow up to complete the application and paperwork process.

* Adjustments and discounts will be applied during checkout if applicable. *
